Emilia

Karussell auf einem Weihnachtsmarkt

This year was the first time I went to a German Christmas market. I still remember the magical feeling there. The Christmas market was on a square in the centre of Lübeck. There were many old buildings around the market. A big church stands on one side and the town hall on the other. In the middle are small wooden stalls. It smelled of sweet pastries and mulled wine. Above me I saw many big fairy lights. They hung like a glowing spider’s web all over the square.

Then I saw my friends. We greeted each other and walked together between the stalls. On the left side I saw a small fire. Over the fire, “flaming salmon” was being prepared. The fish was hanging on a wooden board above the fire and the flames were touching it lightly.

To my right, roasted almonds and other sweets were being sold. Gingerbread hearts hung from the ceiling of the stall. A little further on, another fire was burning, but this time without fish. A man poured alcohol over a burning piece of sugar and the hot liquid dripped into a large bowl of mulled wine. So that’s a Feuerzangenbowle.

We all bought some mulled wine. That’s hot wine with spices. A friend of mine bought a hot chocolate. Then I stood in a circle with my friends and said ‘Cheers! The cup of hot drink warmed my hands and Christmas music was playing in the background. It was a lovely, Christmas evening.

Many greetings
Emilia
