Church bells can be heard regularly throughout Germany, on every hour, half hour and and even sometimes every quarter hour! Living next to a church can be quite noisy, especially during the night. They really are a big part of the culture and general atmosphere, whether you are a christian or not. 

In this episode we follow Jonas on his first few days of moving to Hamburg. Join us and hear more about this wonderfully green city.

ich lebe jetzt seit über einem Jahr in Hamburg. Die beste Jahreszeit ist der Sommer. Die ganze Stadt ist so grün und überall sind Blumen. Hamburg ist sogar die grünste Stadt in Europa! Wenn ich durch die Straßen laufe, kann ich die Vögel in den Bäumen singen hören. Die Vögel sind sehr laut hier, aber nicht so laut wie die Kirchenglocken! 

Ich bin an einem Samstagabend in Hamburg angekommen. Es war Herbst und fast alle Blätter waren gelb. Meine neue Wohnung lag direkt am Stadtpark. Um 10 Uhr am nächsten Morgen hörte ich ein Brummen vor meinem Fenster. Ich öffnete das Fenster, um es besser hören zu können. Dann hörte ich den Klang von vielen Kirchenglocken, nah und fern, wie ein Bienenschwarm. 

In Deutschland läuten viele Kirchenglocken mehrmals am Tag. Manche läuten sogar alle 15 Minuten: Einmal um viertel nach, zweimal um halb, dreimal um viertel vor und viermal zur vollen Stunde. Viele Menschen mögen das laute Geräusch nicht. Man braucht viel Zeit, um sich daran zu gewöhnen, besonders wenn man neben einer Kirche wohnt. Ich aber liebe die Kirchenglocken. Für mich sind sie eine Erinnerung an eine größere Gemeinschaft. Jetzt nutze ich die Kirchenglocken immer sonntags als meinen Wecker.

I’ve been living in Hamburg for over a year now. The best season is summer. The whole city is so green and there are flowers everywhere. Hamburg is even the greenest city in Europe! When I walk through the streets, I can hear the birds singing in the trees. The birds are very loud here, but not as loud as the church bells! 

I arrived in Hamburg on a Saturday evening. It was autumn and almost all the leaves were yellow. My new flat was right next to the city park. At 10 o’clock the next morning I heard a humming outside my window. I opened the window to hear it better. Then I heard the sound of many church bells, near and far, like a swarm of bees. 

In Germany, many church bells ring several times a day. Some even ring every 15 minutes: Once at quarter past, twice at half past, three times at quarter to and four times on the hour. Many people don’t like the loud noise. It takes a lot of time to get used to it, especially if you live next to a church. But I love the church bells. For me, they are a reminder of a larger community. Now I always use the church bells as my alarm clock on Sundays.
