The Grimm brothers’ fairytales are known throughout the world; originally collected from spoken tales and fables. Terrifyingly, these stories have only recently been made appropriate for children! In their later years, the brothers wrote the first German Dictionary.

In Germany, you can take a guided tour throughout the many cities and town that have inspired fairytales. We travelled to Kassel, to explore Grimmwelt Museum and to learn more about the Grimm brothers’ fairytales!

vor ein paar Wochen habe ich die Stadt Kassel besucht. Kassel liegt ungefähr in der Mitte von Deutschland. Wilhelm und Jacob Grimm wurden hier geboren. Sie sind auch als die Gebrüder Grimm für ihre Märchen bekannt.

Wir haben in Kassel das Museum ‘Grimmwelt’ besucht, um mehr über die Gebrüder Grimm zu erfahren. Das Museum liegt auf einem Hügel im Zentrum der Stadt. Im Museum gab es viele interaktive Erlebnisse. Ich habe mich manchmal wie in einem Märchen gefühlt. Im Museum habe ich gelernt, dass die Gebrüder Grimm das erste deutsche Wörterbuch geschrieben haben. Sie starteten mit dem Projekt im Jahr 1840. Es hat über hundert Jahre gedauert, bis das Wörterbuch fertig war! Die Gebrüder Grimm haben auch weltberühmte Märchen geschrieben. Die Grimm-Märchen sind manchmal fröhlich, traurig oder auch wirklich erschreckend. Eines der berühmtesten Märchen ist Rotkäppchen. Fast jeder kennt wahrscheinlich diesen Dialog aus Rotkäppchen:  

“Ei, Großmutter, was hast du für große Ohren!” – “Damit ich dich besser hören kann!” – “Ei, Großmutter, was hast du für große Augen!” – “Damit ich dich besser sehen kann!” – “Aber, Großmutter, was hast du für ein entsetzlich großes Maul!” – “Damit ich dich besser fressen kann!” 

Also aufgepasst, liebe Hörerinnen und Hörer: Bald ist Halloween. Vielleicht lauft ihr diese Woche lieber nicht durch dunkle Wälder und folgt einer Spur aus Brotkrümeln!

a few weeks ago I visited the city of Kassel. Kassel is located approximately in the middle of Germany. Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm were born here. They are also known as the Brothers Grimm for their fairy tales.

We visited the ‘Grimmwelt’ museum in Kassel to learn more about the Grimm brothers. The museum is located on a hill in the center of the city. There were many interactive experiences in the museum. I sometimes felt like I was in a fairy tale. In the museum, I learned that the Grimm brothers wrote the first German dictionary. They started the project in 1840, and it took over a hundred years to finish the dictionary! The Grimm brothers also wrote world famous fairy tales. The Grimm fairy tales are sometimes happy, sad or really scary. One of the most famous fairy tales is Little Red Riding Hood. Almost everyone probably knows this dialogue from Little Red Riding Hood:  

” Aye, grandmother, what big ears you have!” – “So I can hear you better!” – “Aye, grandmother, what big eyes you have!” – “So that I can see you better!” – “But, grandmother, what an awfully big mouth you have!” – “So that I can eat you better!” 

So pay attention, dear listeners: Halloween is coming soon. Maybe this week you should better not walk through dark woods and follow a trail of breadcrumbs!
