“Plätzchen” are the biscuits German families make at Christmas. Traditionally the entire family will come together to bake, decorate and taste the delicious cookies!

In the early weeks of Advent (or even before, if the excitement levels are already high), Plätzchen is a wonderfully warming indoor activity for when the weather is miserable & dark outside.

es war ein regnerischer Samstagmorgen Ende November. Ich wachte auf und hörte Lärm von unten. Ich stand auf, zog mich an und ging die Treppe herunter. Die ganze Familie meines Freundes war in der Küche versammelt. Auf dem Tisch standen viele Zutaten: Mehl, Butter, Eier, Puderzucker und verschiedene Schokostreusel. Alle lächelten und sagten: “Heute backen wir zusammen Plätzchen!” Plätzchen sind Weihnachtskekse.

Wir haben alle Zutaten zusammengemischt und die Plätzchen ausgestochen. Wir haben sie gebacken und mit Zitronenglasur und Schokostreuseln verziert. Bis zum Nachmittag hatten wir über hundert Plätzchen gebacken. Wir haben alle einen Weihnachtskeks probiert. Am liebsten mochte ich die süßen Zimtsterne. Es war das erste Mal, dass ich Plätzchen gebacken hatte!

Dann kam der Vater meines Freundes nach Hause. Er hatte einen riesigen Tannenbaum auf der Schulter! Er hat ihn in das Wohnzimmer gestellt. Dann haben wir den Tannenbaum mit Kugeln, Schleifen und Kerzen dekoriert. Mit einer Leiter haben wir einen süßen Engel auf die Spitze gesetzt.

It was a rainy Saturday morning at the end of November. I woke up and heard noise from downstairs.
I got up, got dressed and went downstairs. My friend’s whole family was gathered in the kitchen. There were many ingredients on the table: Flour, butter, eggs, icing sugar and various chocolate sprinkles. Everyone smiled and said, “Today we’re going to bake biscuits together!” Biscuits are Christmas biscuits.

We mixed all the ingredients together and cut out the biscuits. We baked them and decorated them with lemon icing and chocolate sprinkles. By the afternoon we had baked over a hundred biscuits. We all tried a Christmas biscuit. My favourite was the sweet cinnamon stars. It was the first time I had baked biscuits!

Then my friend’s father came home. He had a huge Christmas tree on his shoulder! He put it in the living room. Then we decorated the fir tree with baubles, bows and candles. With a ladder we put a cute angel on the top.
